The second new Smart electric car is called #3, and it’s an SUV-coupe
Hashtag Three to follow Hashtag One as Smart continues its Geely-backed renaissance
Smart has unveiled its second all new model following Mercedes-Benz’s tie-up with the Geely automotive leviathan. This second all new model is called… the Smart #3. But of course.
Though we’ve been treated to precious few details other than the name and these sketches, we know this car will be an SUV-coupe in design. Merc’s design boss Gorden Wagener describes its silhouette as ‘muscular’, ‘elegantly sensual’ and ‘perfectly balanced’.
Quite. There are ‘slimmed-down LED headlights’ perched alongside a ‘shark nose’, a two-tone roof, big alloys and ‘scooped cooling ducts’ that apparently point to the car’s performance potential.
Of which no mention has been made as yet. This car’s sibling – the Smart #1 – sits on Geely’s EV-only ‘SEA-2’ platform, with a 66kWh battery and a max range of around 273 miles. There are versions with 264bhp/253lb ft of torque, and a range-topping twin-motor Brabus model offering 4WD and 422bhp.
That Brabus model claims 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds, FYI.
We’ll know more about the hashtag three – the second all-new Smart electric car – on 18 April when it debuts at the Shanghai motor show. The #1 will go on sale in the UK later this summer.
