Woah, Alpine’s working on an electric supercar
New ‘Hypertech’ centre will work on developing French brand’s first superthing
In Good News for building enthusiasts, French carmaker Alpine has announced a new ‘Hypertech Alpine’ engineering centre that will begin doing Cool Things before the year is out.
And in Really Good News for car enthusiasts, one of those Cool Things is a full blown electric supercar. Alpine – masters of lightweighting and handling – making a supercar.
“The brand’s new state-of-the-art engineering centre will bring together some of the best talent in the world to contribute to the development of ultra-high performance vehicles and innovations in cutting-edge technologies for Alpine and Renault Group,” said Alpine.
Hypertech will develop next-gen batteries, including – Battery Bingo! – ‘ultra-high energy density’ cells with solid state tech, “in extreme operating conditions for supercar-type applications.
This is an interesting point, because up until now, battery weight has been the biggest challenge with building a proper pointy supercar. Solid state should bring boons in terms of lightness. Which Alpine kinda likes.
Elsewhere, the centre will also begin developing new electric motors too. Separately, Alpine has confirmed that while F1 activities will continue until the end of 2025, development of a new F1 engine… will not. Ah.
“It is a turning point in the history of the Viry-Châtillon site,” said Alpine boss Philippe Krief, “which will ensure the continuity of a savoir-faire and the inclusion of its rare skills in the Group's ambitious future while strengthening Alpine's position as an 'innovation garage'.
“Its racing DNA remains a cornerstone of the brand. It will continue to fuel an unprecedented industrial and automotive project, thanks particularly to Hypertech Alpine.”
More as we get it.
