    Irritatingly, Kia (and Hyundai, and Genesis) only quote the gross capacity of their EV batteries, a bit like how some of your ‘pint’ of refreshing continental-style lager is actually just frothy head. That means that the last few kWh of the 99.8kWh the company quotes for the battery pack on all versions of the EV9 aren’t actually any good, although the general consensus is that the actual usable capacity is still a hefty 96kWh, good for up to 349 miles.

    Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ - 96kWh

    Mercedes, on the other hand, does quote usable capacity, which on its EQE saloon in 350+ guise, is an EV9-equalling 96kWh. Of course, the EV9 is basically a tower block that’s been laid on its side, while the EQE is a super-slippery aero-pebble. That means that in its most efficient form, it’ll go a quoted 428 miles on a single charge.

    Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV 350+/500 - 96kWh

    It'll surprise you to discover the EQE SUV is effectively an SUV version of the EQE, so shares many of its underparts, including that 96kWh battery, this time on both the 350+ and all-wheel drive 500 versions. As a taller, heavier, blobbier car, though, it won’t go quite as far: 372 miles is the max, according to the official figures.

    Jeep Compass EV Long Range/4xe - 96.3kWh

    The latest Jeep Compass is easily the most convincing car to wear that badge yet (although that’s an impressively low bar to clear). You can get it as a mild hybrid, a PHEV or a smaller-batteried EV, but it’s the long-range version, due in the UK soon, we’re interested in. It gets a massive 96.3kWh pack for up to 403 miles. The rugged dual-motor 4xe gets this pack too.

    A fair unashamed attempt at muscling in on the Tesla Model 3’s patch, the MG IM5 has a lot going for it: for under £50k, you get 441 miles of WLTP range in the Long Range version or 742bhp and 62mph in 3.5 seconds in the Performance model, both of which share a 96.5kWh battery. Unfortunately, there’s rather a lot not going for it too, namely the fact that the front and rear suspensions seem to have been set up by two entirely different people.

    The MG IM6 is – drum roll, please – basically an SUV version of the IM5. Think Model Y to its Model 3. That means it gets the same prodigious power in Performance guise, good for 62mph in a mere 3.5 seconds, and the same chunky battery, although there’s no smaller-batteried version here, and the aero and weight penalty see peak range drop to 388 miles. Unfortunately, it shares the same glaring ride quality flaws as the IM5, too.

    The new Citroen C5 Aircross is basically the same car underneath as the new Jeep Compass we were just talking about, although for whatever reason, it ekes a whole 0.6kWh of extra range out of the battery pack, and will do an official 421 miles on a charge. We’re fans of its unashamedly French approach to wafty ride comfort and family-friendly interior.

    Peugeot e-3008 Long Range - 96.9kWh

    The new Peugeot 3008 is basically the same car underneath as the new Citroen… Okay, we’re going to start sounding like a broken record with all these mid-size Stellantis crossovers. The Long Range e-3008 gets an identical battery size to its e-C5 Aircross stablemate, but has a swishier interior and a coupe-SUV roofline that compromises space but helps push official range even further to 435 miles.

    The new Peugeot 5008 is basically… No. Stop it. Anyway, this one’s not quite the same as the Compass/C5 Aircross/3008, because it’s bigger and has seven seats. Same box of bits underneath, though, and Peugeot’s current design mojo makes it one of the most desirable electric seven seaters around. The extra size and weight impact the range a bit, but it’ll still do a highly respectable 414 WLTP miles.

    Audi E-Tron GT - 97kWh

    The oldest and, in many ways, still the best EV Audi currently makes also has its biggest battery, at 97.0kWh for all versions. Essentially a Porsche Taycan in a business suit, you can go up to 381 miles in the base Quattro, but if you’re the kind of person who enjoys having your organs smooshed into a fine paste, the 912bhp RS Performance model will hit 62mph in just 2.5 seconds while still doing a respectable 365 miles on the official cycle.

    Was the world crying out for a 750bhp electric SUV from Maserati? Probably not, given the number of Grecale Folgores we’ve seen out on the road. But it exists, it’s actually pretty good, and despite sticking with a circa-97kWh usable battery, its recent facelift improved its WLTP range from 310 to a much more competitive 360 miles. Would we recommend buying one over a Macan? Probably not, but we’d applaud you if you did.

    In respect to the oldest of Porsche traditions, the Taycan comes in a baffling array of different variants across three different body styles, but whether you get a base model Sport Turismo or an unhinged Manthey-kitted Turbo GT, you’re getting the same 97kWh battery that’s now fitted to its Audi e-tron GT stablemate. To eke the most range out of it, you’ll want the basic rear-wheel drive saloon, good for a quoted 421 miles.

    We return to Stellantis, and specifically Posh Citroen – sorry, DS – a brand the mega-corp finally seems to be carving out a more distinct identity for (although it remains to be seen if this’ll translate into actual sales). We like the No 7 for its avantgarde styling, bright and high-quality interior and the fact that its beefy battery helps it do a quoted 460 miles in Long Range FWD form.

    We might like its weird aero-wedge sibling, the No 8, even more, though, for how distinctly French (read: a bit odd) it is. That said, its chopped roofline eats into headroom and only gains it an extra six miles of range in total, for a peak of 466 miles. Otherwise, it’s basically the same inside and underneath as the No 7, which is no bad thing, especially when it comes to the brilliantly wacky cabin.

    Maybe you’d see more Lotus Emeyas around if it had a badge that wasn’t so intrinsically linked to lightweight roadsters, not 2.5-tonne electric saloons. It’s otherwise a likeable car, and one that can be efficient too: in its rangiest guise, the basic 600, its 98.9kWh of usable capacity gives it up to 379 miles of range, although this drops off heavily as you move into more powerful versions.

    One of a smattering of GM models fitted with the company’s Ultium battery pack, the incredibly lovely Cadillac Lyriq now gets a 102kWh usable unit across the board, including on the moderately ridiculous 615bhp Lyriq-V. Unsurprisingly, though, that’s not the one to get if you want to extract the most range out of that battery: that’ll be the single-motor model, which does 326 miles on the US’s tougher EPA test cycle.

    Sitting on the same platform and using the same underpinnings as the Lyriq is the more family-geared, seven-seater Vistiq (looked at another way, it’s a slightly shrunken Escalade. Only slightly, though), which unsurprisingly gets the same 102kWh battery pack. This one only gets the 615bhp dual-motor drivetrain, good for an EPA-certified 305 miles.

    Also sharing plenty with those Cadillacs is the Chevrolet Blazer EV, which, confusingly, is a completely different car to the petrol-powered Blazer crossover Chevy also sells. It too gets the same 102kWh battery pack, but there’s a twist: you only get it with the sporty 615bhp Blazer SS, with lesser models getting 85kWh. The bigger battery helps the SS offset the draw of the extra power for a respectable 302 miles of EPA range.

    The first car to break the 100kWh barrier on our list is Polestar’s first proper SUV, with 102kWh in Dual Motor guise, including the 680bhp Performance version (thereabouts, anyway: Polestar and Volvo also include the frothy head when quoting capacities). It’s a very well-rounded, sweet driving car, especially now it’s got a quicker-charging 800V architecture, and it’ll do up to 402 miles.

    It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Rolls-Royce has gone big in every regard with its first EV, and that includes the battery, which comes in at a mighty 102kWh. We really quite like this car, if the 10/10 score we awarded it didn’t make that obvious, although at 329 miles, its range isn’t all that brilliant next to some other big-battery EVs. Must be the weight of all that money in the driver’s wallet.

    Sharing its SPA2 platform with the Polestar 3 means the Volvo ES90, the company’s curious new almost-saloon, gets the same chonky battery. Nailing the Scandi-cabin vibes we’ve come to expect from Volvo of late and packaging them up in something refreshingly un-SUV-shaped (although you still get the ride height), you’ll get a maximum of 432 miles out of it.

    Yep, same underpinnings again. The EX90, though, will ‘only’ do 383 miles thanks to its SUV-ness (why did we all become so obsessed with these things again?), but you do get seven seats. Volvo is in the process of ironing out the notorious software gremlins that have reared their heads, which means it’ll hopefully soon return to being the class-leader we found it at launch.

    Despite sharing lots with the Kia EV9, the equally enormous Hyundai Ioniq 9 gets considerably more usable capacity, helping attain a leggier 385 miles of maximum quoted range in its most efficient form. For a car approximately the same size as Greater Manchester, it’s a remarkably relaxing thing to drive, and one of the very best of the giganto-electro family haulers.

    One of the more, erm, enthusiastically debated car launches of 2026 (before a certain Ferrari came along), the new GT 4-Door is Mercedes-AMG’s first standalone electric model, and while the headline figure is undoubtedly the 1,153bhp it makes in 63 guise, the 106kWh battery shared by all models is nothing to be sniffed at either. In the ‘base model’ 55 (which still has 805bhp), it’s good for up to 426 miles.

    Something of a rival to the AMG GT, the Polestar 5 doesn’t quite hit the same heady heights of power with a max of 871bhp in Performance guise, but makes up for that by being much, much easier on the eyes. It matches the AMG on usable battery capacity too, and you’ll go almost as far in the handsome Swedish car, with up to 421 miles of range (although opting for the Performance drops that right down to 346).

    If the Emeya has a hard time convincing people it should have a Lotus badge, then it’s a near-impossible task for the Eletre, an SUV that weighs about the same as four Series 1 Elans. Come to terms with the badge, though, and it’s a seriously capable, good-to-drive electric SUV which, in its rangiest form, manages a decent quoted 373 miles thanks to that enormous 108kWh of usable capacity.

    Another company who the purists will tell you shouldn’t be building a huge electric SUV, the Porsche Cayenne Electric is nevertheless a hugely capable, complete package which, in 1,140bhp (with launch control) Turbo form, also happens to be the most powerful roadgoing Porsche ever. We’re not interested in that, though, we’re interested in its big 108kWh battery, good for up to 414 miles if you go for the slippery Cayenne S Coupe.

    The second model in BMW’s upcoming deluge of ‘Neue Klasse’ cars, the new i3 is essentially the electric version of what’ll eventually be the next 3 Series. The sole version so far, the 50 xDrive, gets a huge 108.7kWh battery pack which, in a relatively small, slippery car, makes for a gigantic 562 miles of quoted range. We haven’t driven it yet, but given BMW’s recent EV form, it’ll probably be very good.

    What we have driven is the i3’s SUV cousin, the iX3, a car that represents a huge leap forward for mainstream EVs, and one good enough to have been crowned TG’s Car of the Year for 2026. With the range-topping (for now) 50 xDrive twin-motor setup, it gets the same 108.7kWh battery as the equivalent i3, although because of the usual SUV caveats, the most you’ll get out of it is a Proclaimers-pleasing 500 miles.

    A car that now looks a generation or so behind BMW’s shinier, newer EVs (and many times uglier), the iX nevertheless remains a very strong all-round electric SUV package. It gets a slightly bigger battery than the i3 and iX3 in xDrive60 form too, meaning that despite a 536bhp drain on its resources, you can still get up to a 426-mile quoted range, which means plenty of time without having to get out and look at it.

    A big, luxurious car like the Cadillac Celestiq needs a big, luxurious battery. If it’s possible for a battery to be luxurious. Either way, the mind-meltingly styled, vanishingly rare, circa-$400k Celestiq gets one in the form of a big 111kWh unit, which manages to haul this big, heavy beast to a 303-mile EPA range. With the only real parallel, the Rolls Spectre, a two-door, there’s very little else like the Celestiq on sale, and it’s rather magnificent.

    For whatever reason, nobody seems to be discussing the technical nitty-gritty of Ferrari’s first electric car. Can’t possibly imagine why. For what it’s worth, Ferrari’s so far only given us the gross battery capacity of 122kWh, but it’s thought around 111kWh of that is usable. With performance rather than efficiency the priority here, that gives a good but not great 330-mile range.

    Important car for Volvo, this, given it squares up to enormously talented rivals like the BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC EV. Range-wise, though, it has them both pipped, just: the 503-mile peak managed by the twin-motor P12 beats the iX3’s best effort by a whole three miles. That’s thanks in part to an even bigger battery, with around 112kWh of usable range. It’s not quite as complete a package as the BMW, but it’s a pleasingly hygge-spec alternative.

    As well as making it marginally less eyeball-searing, the recent facelift for the BMW 7 Series range also brought new batteries to the electric i7. Most versions now get 112.5kWh of usable capacity (although for some reason, the full-fat M70 model gets an entire 0.1kWh less), providing an official peak of 452 miles. We’re yet to try the updated car, but the previous one was very good, so we doubt an injection of Neue Klasse tech will spoil things.

    Yep, it’s a big, posh van, although that does the Mercedes VLE a bit of a disservice. What it really is is hugely comfortable, luxurious and screen-festooned transport for celebs/execs/big, rich families, and Mercedes would rather you call it a ‘Grand Limousine’, which… no. Anyway, the fact it is a van means there’s room for a massive battery, specifically a 115kWh one, and Merc estimates an official range of over 400 miles.

    No surprises that the electric version of a big car, the Mercedes G-Class, gets a big battery. Also very surprising is that because it’s shaped like the Southbank Centre and has 579bhp, that enormous 117kWh capacity doesn’t actually translate into a big range: just 291 miles on the official cycle. Truthfully, this four-motor, £155k white elephant doesn’t really make a huge amount of sense, but we still sort of love it.

    You’d expect a company that’s made as big a splash in EV Land as Lucid to pack some serious batteries, and sure enough, it does. The size of the batteries packed by the Air saloon increases as you move up through the range, topping out at 118kWh in the dazzlingly good 1,234bhp Sapphire performance model. Not only is it staggering to drive and hypercar quick, but it manages a 437-mile range – and that’s on the strict EPA cycle.

    Even for people whose jobs it is to stay on top of new cars, we sometimes get a bit lost when it comes to Mercedes’ current range, especially with cars like the EQS SUV, a £130k aero-blob of luxury and astounding refinement that appears not to exist outside of certain Merc showrooms. Still, exist it does, and it’s fitted with a vast 118kWh battery that offers up to 400 miles of quoted range. Overall, a decent if not class-leading car.

    Soon to be on sale in Britain, the Denza Z9 GT is a 1,140bhp crab-walking mega-estate from a posh sub-brand of BYD which, in its European guise, gets a massive 120kWh usable battery. Range is a slightly underwhelming 372 miles, but its real party trick is its compatibility with BYD’s Flash charging system, which the company says will juice that huge battery from 10 to 70 per cent in just seven minutes.

    Mercedes’ not-particularly-successful EQ-badged EVs are being steadily phased out in favour of electric siblings to the company’s combustion models, but there’s still some life in them. The big EQS saloon has just been facelifted, lifting battery capacity from 118 to 122kWh (although the entry-level EQS 400 gets 112). That, combined with its massively aero-optimised body, gives a ridiculous maximum range of 575 miles, making it the longest-range EV on sale.

    Tesla’s notoriously cagey about outright quoting its cars’ battery capacities, but a combination of official homologation documents and good old fashioned maths means they’re not too tricky to work out. Unsurprisingly, it’s the massive and not-at-all controversial Cybertruck that gets the biggest battery pack out of any of its cars, although it’s still comparatively small next to other full-size electric pickups at around 122.4kWh, for up to 325 EPA miles.

    Company that already builds big car with big battery builds even bigger car with even bigger battery. Shocker, we know. The seven-seat Lucid Gravity SUV, sitting on the same platform as the Air saloon, compensates for its extra size and heft with a battery that can store up to 123kWh in range-topping Grand Touring form. Partly because it has ‘just’ 828bhp versus the Air Sapphire’s 1,234bhp, it’ll go slightly further, too: up to 450 miles.

    Remember VinFast? The Vietnamese company has been enjoying steadily increasing sales in plenty of the markets it operates in, but the US isn’t one of them, as it managed to shift fewer than 1,500 cars there last year. Nevertheless, it’s still plugging on in the States with a two-model range, one of which is the seven-seater, 123kWh VF9 SUV, good for a respectable 330-mile EPA range.

    Not to be outdone by Lucid in the ‘American EV startup with absolutely gigantic battery pack’ stakes, the friendly-looking seven-seater Rivian R1S gets a mighty 140kWh of usable capacity if you opt for the biggest-batteried Max version. It is shaped like it’s made of Lego, though, which no doubt contributes to the fact that, with an EPA-estimated 410-miles, that extra capacity still can’t match the slippery Gravity for outright range.

    Of course, if you prefer to use the back of your big, boxy electric off-roader for chucking stuff instead of people, there’s always the R1T pickup truck. Mostly identical underneath to the R1S, it gets the same suite of motor and battery options, meaning it too maxes out at 140kWh. The switch from SUV to truck sees it eke out an extra 10 miles of range though, for 420 miles overall.

    With the last few cars on this list mostly limited to North America, it’s an absolutely massive leap up from the EQS to the new, undisputed champion of battery capacity in Europe: the new BMW iX5, with a mighty 141kWh. That means a huge 525-mile range, although that’s on the more lenient WLTP test – the American EPA cycle pegs it at 435 miles. The strength of the smaller iX3 leaves us with high expectations here, so watch this space for our review.

    In awe at the size of this battery pack. Absolute unit. Nothing else on sale at the moment can top the Ultium batteries used by General Motors in its very biggest electric SUVs and trucks, starting (on a purely alphabetical basis) with the vast, opulent Cadillac Escalade IQ and even vaster, opulent-er long-wheelbase IQL. Four-tonne, 750bhp behemoths, they’re so heavy they’re not even subject to an official EPA range test, but Caddy claims up to 465 miles.

    The Chevrolet Silverado EV gets the same box of bits and leviathan of a battery as the Escalade IQ, but packages it up in a more blue-collar pickup shape, although it’s all relative when you’re still spending at least $91,795 to get the Max Range model with the full 205kWh unit. That gives you a GM-estimated range of up to 478 miles, because again, this thing doesn’t have to undergo the EPA’s tests on account of its gigantic, massive enormousness.

    Just as is the case with their gas-powered counterparts, the GMC Sierra EV is little more than a rebadged Chevy Silverado EV, meaning it gets all-but identical specs, right down to the GM-estimated 478-mile range you get out of the 205kWh Max Range version. Unlike the Chevy, we’ve driven this one, and found it impressive, if a little reminiscent of what it must be like to pilot an Antonov An-124 cargo plane.

    Not to be outdone by its platform-mates in the sheer ridiculousness stakes, the reborn electric Hummer (a statement that still makes our brains melt a little) ekes out an extra 7kWh of capacity to be the biggest-batteried EV on sale anywhere. We can’t pretend this is a car that makes any rational sense, especially when that gigantic battery makes for a fairly underwhelming maximum of 363 manufacturer-estimated miles in pickup form, but gosh, we can’t help but love it.
