This is the all-new MG3, a radically changed hybrid supermini

MG changes things up for the 3 in a big way

Published: 26 Feb 2024

This is the all-new MG3. It’s a complete revamp of the supermini, and now features a fancy hybrid powertrain.

There's been a thorough overhaul of its design, with the MG3's new wider, fatter grille, sharply angled lights and front bumper treatment certainly making it look upset about... something. Could just be smug, mind.

Not least because MG now proudly proclaims the new 3 is the fastest accelerating hybrid in its segment, with a 0-62mph time of eight seconds flat. The hybrid Toyota Yaris can only manage 9.7s.

Ah yes, hybrid. Taking on the likes of the Peugeot 208 and Vauxhall Corsa, the MG3 now gets a 100kW electric motor coupled with a 1.5-litre four-pot engine and three-speed auto ‘box. Together it all produces 191bhp, while the juice from a 1.83kWh battery is supplied by a separate generator and helps to deliver acceleration up to motorway speeds in five swift seconds.

The MG3's hybrid system automatically toggles between five different drive modes to return a claimed fuel economy of 64mpg and just 100g/km CO2. There are a further three manually selectable drive modes, each of which is fairly self explanatory: Eco, Standard and Sport. MG reckons it'll be a hoot to drive, too.

And finally, it'll come in two specs, SE and Trophy. There's a decent sweep of infotainment – including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – and safety tech as standard, while the higher trim includes fake-cow upholstery, keyless entry, a 360-degree parking camera and heated front seats and wheel.

Oh, and it's got a bigger boot. The ‘biggest boot in the B-segment’, no less. Excited?
