The Hyundai Ioniq 5 ‘XRT’ is an off-road version built for the U.S. market

Hyundai is releasing a refreshed Ioniq 5 for the U.S. market in 2025, which includes a rugged ‘XRT’ trim level that wants to be taken seriously as an off-roader. Just look at the amount of body protection it's wearing.

We’ve yet to get confirmation of the dual motor's output (likely mid-200s), but we do know its 84kWh battery is targeting between 250 and 280 miles of range and will be complemented by an all-wheel drivetrain. Other bits include a 23mm suspension lift kit that makes for an approach angle of 19.8 degrees and a departure of 30, while the new front hooks make for a towing capacity of over 2.6 tonnes. Or, in other words, numbers to be taken seriously.

The new external look is set off by black 18in aluminium alloys wrapped around a set of all-terrain tyres, while a bespoke front and rear fascia design, roof rails and rear wing have all been worked in. The dandy new body armour is complemented by black paint across areas like the side sills, mirror caps and window trim.

As part of the wider Ioniq 5 revamp, the cabin will have a redesigned centre console and steering wheel, while the 12.3in infotainment system can now support over-the-air updates and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility from the get-go. For the XRT versions, these will be built upon further by the usual spate of ‘this is the special one’ badges, black headliners, slightly different seat upholstery and… that’s about it.

“We have designed this XRT to offer more protection, connection and functionality,” says Hyundai’s exterior design senior manager for North America, Brad Arnold. “The digital camo pattern was created using our Ioniq pixel as the building block. The matte-black wheels also display the same pixel theme while providing strength and cooling.”

The new Ioniq 5 and its XRT spin-off will go on sale later this month, with prices expected to start at around $45k. Expect the serious one to nudge past 50, though.
