Watch a tricked-out Hyundai Ioniq 5 N complete a Pikes Peak record
With a time of 9m 30s, the 5 N TA Spec snatched the ‘modified electric SUV’ record at the historic event
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a handsome brute, wouldn’t you agree? And recently, it gained the credentials to prove it's not all show and no go by setting a new record at Pikes Peak in the ‘modified electric SUV’ class. That is a real class, honest.
Using a customised ‘TA Spec’ for the climb, Hyundai WRC driver Dani Sordo completed the 12.42-mile run in 9m 30s. Yes, we know, that’s not quite as dizzying as the 8m 47.6s set by the Ford Supervan 4.2, but it’s an impressive achievement considering this is still a production-grade vehicle. Sort of.
It’s carrying the same powertrain as the standard N - albeit uprated slightly to 678bhp - although a stickier set of Yokohama tyres, new shock absorbers and bigger brakes have been thrown on. There’s also the small question of that wing and front splitter, which won’t exactly be road-legal.
You’ll also spot a few other bits and pieces inside that aren’t from the factory, including a six-point safety harness, a custom roll cage and a fire extinguisher. OK, it’s not much of a production vehicle any more, is it?
We jest, the TA Spec exists so that everyone can see just how much motorsport potential can be harnessed out of the Ioniq 5 platform. Check the video below of its Pikes Peak run for a more… visual understanding.
