This is the last naturally aspirated, 6.3-litre V8 Mercedes-AMG GT

... and also the most powerful GT3 car the Silver Arrows have ever created

Published: 19 Aug 2024

The AMG GT’s association with the naturally aspirated V8 will finally come to an end with this: the ‘Edition 130Y Motorsport’. It’s named in celebration of 130 years of Mercedes in motorsport (duh), though it won’t go down without a fight because it’s the Silver Arrows’ most powerful GT3 car ever.

The white coats of Affalterbach have squeezed as much as they possibly can out of that glorious 6.3-litre V8, having binned the air restrictor and thrown on a fruitier exhaust system. That now results in around 671bhp and 538lb ft coursing through its six-speed sequential gearbox, and allowed Mercedes to set a new ‘GT car’ record at Mount Panorama with a time of 1m 56.6s. Probably sounds brutal en route to its 196mph top speed, too.

The exterior’s also gone through some big changes. That front splitter and its corresponding air inlets have been revised, as has the rear diffuser and bigger DRS-inspired rear wing. All this combines to provide an extra 15 per cent downforce compared to the standard AMG GT3, which isn’t exactly a slouch itself.

In terms of the design, the funky new colourways are inspired by the 300 SL W 194 from 1952, particularly with the blue rhombuses along the front wings and the colour-framed radiator grille. Though the 18in magnesium wheels are very much from 2024.

The interior continues to link back to the 300 too, with the blue/white chequered seat upholstery a direct nod to the car driven by Juan Manuel Fangio, while the new steering wheel now has walnut wood handles and ‘anodised’ buttons. Whatever those are.

Just 13 will be made and priced at £877k a pop before taxes and all that. Reckon you’d be tempted if you could?
