You’ll soon be able to buy the Renault Master as a hydrogen van with 435 miles of range
Renault already offers the Master in ICE and electric forms, but a third propulsion method is on the way
Breaking news! The Renault Master has just been awarded the International Van of the Year 2025 award, with the Ford E-Transit Custom and Stellantis ProOne Large Van range sharing second place. And would you believe it, this isn’t even the most exciting Master-based news story of the week!
Oh no, that honour goes to the new Master H2-Tech Prototype that was unveiled at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover.
You can probably guess from the name, but we’ll spell it out anyway. This is a hydrogen-powered version of the fourth-gen Master, and we’re told that it’ll be on sale in production from next year.
Renault is promising that the fuel cell and electric motor tech will provide a range of 435 miles (700km) on a single tank of hydrogen whatever the weather. It also notes that a refuel takes just five minutes. Time is money, people.
The H2-Tech has been developed by HYVIA – a joint venture between the Renault Group and Plug Power that focuses solely on hydrogen mobility. Of course, the Master is already on sale in ICE and electric forms, and we’re told that this hydrogen architecture retains the full load space and payload.
All versions will be manufactured on the same assembly line at the Batilly plant near Metz, with the hydrogen-powered Masters getting their own specialist H2-Tech dealers to look after sales and aftersales.
Is hydrogen power the future for commercial vehicles?
