Oh my word, Lanzante is building a McLaren P1 GTR drift hypercar

A drift car that uses a P1 GTR as its donor. The world has officially gone Mike Whiddett-style mad

Published: 27 Mar 2024

A McLaren P1 GTR is being given the full drift car treatment. Yep, you did read that correctly. Lanzante's latest project sounds absolutely bananas.

The drifty P1 will come from a collaboration between Dean Lanzante and his new pal, Mike Whiddett, the drift superstar. The two have teamed up, naming the wild venture ‘MadMac’ – we see what you did there, lads – and have plans to unveil it at Goodwood Festival of Speed.

"The idea for the project came about after meeting Mike at Goodwood last year," says Dean Lanzante. "He visited our stand, saw what we had on display, and we started to explore what was possible. We like to think that we build some of the most extreme cars, but Mike saw this as a challenge to take things up a level or two."

In the next 100 days, the bodywork of a track-focussed P1 GTR – carefully crafted by Lanzante and the team – will travel over land and sea to Whiddett’s ‘Mad Mike’ lab in New Zealand for a spot of modifying. O’Gara Coach – hailing all the way from California – is also helping to build the crazy thing, which will then come back to West Sussex for its debut showdown.

As you well know, this isn’t Mike’s first hare-brained rodeo. The Red Bull athlete has already turned up to previous FoS fixtures with his custom-built drift-spec Lamborghini Huracan, nicknamed Nimbul, and a raft of rotary-powered Mazdas.

Whiddett said, “Being a proud kiwi, I’m inspired to push this McLaren project to the absolute limit, and then take it around the world… SIDEWAYS!”

But of course he is. If you're curious to know more about the P1's undoubtedly bonkers spec, we're told more details will be released in the run up to the main event, so keep an eye out for updates.
