Peugeot news - Peugeot to shut Ryton plant - 2006

Peugeot is to close its UK-based factory at Ryton in the West Midlands.

The closure will result in the loss of 2,300 jobs, with a first phase of redundancies in July 2006 when the plant switches from two shifts to one.

The final job cuts will come in July 2007 when production of the 206 supermini ends.

Peugeot says the high cost of production and logistics make it unjustifiable to invest in new car building at Ryton.

Cars have been built at Ryton for 70 years, with the site originally built to make Humbers and Hillmans.
