Question of the Week: which sports car should Nissan bring back?

Nissan’s Ivan Espinosa - currently its global product boss, very-soon-to-be the new big boss - once told TG he wants to build an affordable sports car. But what should that be?

Last year he hinted that the Silvia could return, which didn’t at all get us excited. The lineage started back in 1965 as a series of boxy coupes, and blossomed into the fabulous S15 just before the turn of the millennium. Powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-four and offered with a choice of manual boxes and *all* the rear-wheel drives, the S15 continues to be a popular option in the drift world despite ending production 23 years ago.

The hot hatch segment is also buzzing right now, with stuff like the GR Yaris (£44k) and Civic Type R (£47k). Not exactly affordable. It means the time has never been better for the return of the Pulsar GTI-R.

You remember it: big splitters, fat exhaust, pronounced rear wing, massive bonnet snorkels and all. The four-pot also pushed out a healthy 227bhp, which prompted Nissan to enter it into the WRC to… no success. It didn’t win a single of the nine rallies it entered over two years, and we feel Nissan really ought to do something about that with a second coming.
