This is the Porsche 928 ‘Surfari’, built to conquer the world’s… beaches
Cornwall’s never seen anything like this before
While Porsche’s spate of ‘Safari’ skunkworks projects are built to conquer the world’s deserts and forests in the form of some sort of 911, the 928 has never received such treatment… until now.
Built by a Polish father-son duo who wanted to focus their passion for watersports into their own car, the 928 ‘Surfari’s’ goal is simple: act as the ultimate beach-buggy and surf-board amalgamation.
No specific details have been provided on mechanical changes, but we do know it still has either a 5.0 or 5.4-litre water-cooled V8 fitted from the factory - likely with a few modifications to bump it up from its minimum output of 240bhp.
It’s also seen upgrades applied to the differential, gearbox and suspension by former Dakar Rally competitor Tomasz Staniszewski. Makes sense, given that the original fittings weren’t exactly bred for annihilating sand castles and impersonating Mitch Buchannon.
But what this 928 Surfari offers over Mitch's expertly-honed beach running slo-mos is the sheer number of spot lamps; they work well with its pre-existing circular headlights, no? Then there are the chunky tyres and window nets in combination with numerous towing attachments and, of course, the surfboard roof panels.
The car is now said to have entered official work duties on Poland’s Baltic coast, where it will participate in activities like the brilliantly bonkers Hel Riders Festival. Not a bad retirement plan for the old 928, we’d proffer.
