Boo! Nissan has finally built its last ever R35 GT-R

Sad news for everyone except the nine “master craftsmen” that built all 48,000 engines. Hope they get a holiday

This is it. You’re looking at the last ever R35 Nissan GT-R. End of an era indeed.

Yep, having first launched all the way back in 2007, the final R35 has now rolled off the production line at Nissan’s Tochigi plant just outside Tokyo. And what an example it is too – a Premium T-spec with midnight purple paint (yes, we thought it was green originally too) and gold wheels. Ooft. This particular car is apparently destined for a customer in Japan. At least it won’t sit in a museum for the rest of eternity.

“After 18 remarkable years, the R35 GT-R has left an enduring mark on automotive history,” said Nissan boss Ivan Espinosa.

“Its legacy is a testament to the passion of our team and the loyalty of our customers around the globe. Thank you for being part of this extraordinary journey.”

Nissan says that it built approximately 48,000 R35s over its lifetime, with every single example getting an iconic VR38DETT twin-turbo V6 engine that was hand assembled by one of only nine “master craftsmen”. We hope they’re now getting a holiday.

Thankfully though, it sounds like this won’t be the end for the GT-R name.

“To the many fans of the GT-R worldwide, I want to tell you this isn’t a goodbye to the GT-R forever, it’s our goal for the GT-R nameplate to one day make a return," said Espinosa.

“We understand the expectations are high, the GT-R badge is not something that can be applied to just any vehicle; it is reserved for something truly special and the R35 set the bar high. So, all I can ask is for your patience. While we don’t have a precise plan finalized today, the GT-R will evolve and reemerge in the future.”
