Bought a McLaren BP23? Here’s your new desk sculpture
106 ‘Speed Form’ sculptures are being sent to lucky future owners. Coming soon to eBay?
McLaren Automotive has a new product. Not only is it not-a-supercar, it doesn’t even move at all. It’s a 3.6kg block of metal and carbon fibre that hints at the design of the new BP23 ‘hyper-GT’ three-seater. McLaren calls it the ‘Speed Form’.
Well, as a desk ornament, it probably beats a Newton’s Cradle. A total of 106 pieces – matching the build total of McLaren’s new tri-seat F1 successor – have been made, taking 100 hours each, including 30 hours of hand-polishing alone. The stylished three-seater layout with rear deck fin is supposed to offers hints of the BP23’s design, but your guess is as good as ours. ‘Hope it’s not that boxy in real life’ has been the general consensus in the Top Gear office.
The well-heeled folks who got on the lists for McLaren’s fastest car ever – because yes, it’s been confirmed this new hybrid will top 243mph – will receive their sculptures this week. The finished car – and its proper name – isn’t due to be revealed until much later, but you can while away the time finding out how McLaren’s tailoring a three-seat cockpit for the 21st Century by clicking here…
