Chinese carmaker Chery is coming to the UK with this: the 745-mile Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid

Chery joins sibling brands Omoda and Jaecoo in selling directly in the UK

Chinese carmaker Chery is coming to the UK, and it's coming with this: the elegantly named Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid SUV. In fact, it's kinda already here, because Chery's already thrown the seven-seater electric behemoth up the Goodwood Hill. Why the heck not.

The Tiggo 8 uses the same Super Hybrid System (SHS) found in the Omoda 7, which marries the powerhouse of electricities with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine, producing 201bhp and generating 269lb ft torque.

We’re not told how big the self-charging Tiggo 8 SHS’s battery is, but we are told it’ll be good for 745 miles of range on one fuel tank and one charge, will whip around town for 56 miles on pure electric (decent), and also plug in for a faster charge. Neat.

In the cabin, it’s a tech capsule, with heated and vented seats in a five-two layout – with "proper" legroom in the third row, apparently. A 12-speaker sound system, posh interior lighting, capacious boot and a panoramic roof are features Chery reckons gives the Tiggo 8 a "high-spec" and make it "premium".

Like stablemate Omoda, it believes the modern definition of ‘luxury’ means smart tech and clever software stuff, not engine performance and walnut dashes. Thusly, the Tiggo’s safety and driver assist features include adaptive cruise control, cabin filtration and lane centre assist.

That being said, Euro NCAP recently published the results of its most recent tests, rating the Tiggo 7 and 8 in this round. After finding issues with a curtain airbag not deploying correctly, it dropped both SUVs from five to four stars in its safety assessment, and asked the brand to revisit the system’s design.

Still, there’s a generous seven-year warranty given with the Tiggo 8. UK specs and prices? Not quite landed yet, but we’re told it’ll be competitively pitched and fully loaded, with deliveries expected by late summer.
