This might be one of the greatest superbike saves you'll ever see

Adrian Huertas got a massive tankslapper… then rejected the laws of physics

Published: 09 Sep 2024

There are bike saves… and there’s this; an entirely new addition to the genre, featuring at least three acts and provoking more introspection than a Laurence Olivier Award-winning play.

Allow us to set the scene: Magny Cours, France. It’s raining. A man - World Supersport championship leader Adrian Huertas - enters stage left. Out of nowhere, the back end of his Ducati steps out and gives him the mother of all tankslappers. He is surely doomed.

But wait! The protagonist fights back, wrestling with his own momentum as the bike hurls itself this way and that, trying to catapult him skywards like a 955cc Buckaroo.

Huertas has survived, but at what cost? The act of staying upright has set him on a collision course with an advertising board. He is surely doomed.

But wait! The main character steels himself and smashes the sign to smithereens, somehow remaining vertical as a gaggle of marshals recoil from the impact.

Again Huertas has survived, but at what cost? He is now heading for the Armco barrier and the soaked grass is about to give way to a gravel trap. He is surely doomed.

But wait! The leading man steadies himself again and bounces off the wall, harnessing the power of Newton’s third law through a combination of the bike’s sturdy frame and also his left elbow, all while wearing some of the ad board like a prom king’s sash.

Cue stunned silence from the audience, who can’t quite believe that Huertas has emerged both unscathed and perpendicular to the ground. Aaand scene.

Not only did Huertas shake off his practice session incident, but he did so well enough to take pole position at Magny Cours before maintaining his status as championship leader. Take a bow, sir.
