Final thoughts and pick of the range

Nissan Qashqai review: not the unassailable class leader it once was, but it's still one of the better small SUVs on sale.

The Qashqai still ranks among the best small SUVs. It has a lot going for it, but it’s not the unassailable class-leader it once was. The aforementioned Ateca, CX-5 and 3008 are more fun to drive, just as comfortable and feel more modern inside.

But the original crossover isn’t without merit; those new 1.3 engines make it more refined yet punchier than ever to drive, and there’s lots to like about buying locally and supporting British car factories. Especially, y’know, right now.

As self-confessed SUV cynics, though, we make our usual plea yet again: could you not make do with a regular hatchback? It’ll be cheaper on fuel, better to drive, easier to park and 95 per cent as practical. Most of us don’t need AWD and by buying a standard hatch (albeit not a Nissan, now it’s stopped selling the Pulsar), you’ll save a bundle. Think it through before you commit.
