A song of… Fire & Ice: this rare VW ID.3 GTX is decked out like a 1990s hot hatch
VW goes full Game of Thrones by introducing moderately purple limited edition
This is a very rare, very purple electric Volkswagen that takes its name from a 1990s hot hatch. Welcome back to the ID.3 Fire & Ice, and its £48,360 price tag.
We say ‘back’, because a concept version was shown off last year. Now it’s on the production line, but a very short one – VW is only building 1,990 of them (geddit?), and each one is as purple as George RR Martin’s prose.
Unlike Martin’s expansive books, this Volkswagen ID.3 Fire und Ice sadly does without political intrigue, expertly crafted plot or hordes of undead marching south. Instead, it gets a modern take on the Mk2 Golf’s “striking ultra-violet” metallic paint, complete with a geometric pattern.
It also gets 20in wheels, red roof strips, puddle lights, and the original F&I logo from the Nineties. Inside you’ll find such hits as sports seats with a ‘hot and cold’ theme, plus little fire and ice logos and coloured stitching on the steering wheel, instrument panel, door trims and floor mats.
Moves a bit faster than the books, mind: it’s a GTX, which means 322bhp from a single ‘AP550’ motor powering the rear wheels.
That allows it to sprint from 0-62mph in 5.7s and max out at 124mph. Range is 367 miles (WLTP), and you can hose charge into that 79kWh battery quick enough: 10-80 per cent on a 185kW charger takes 26 minutes.
Like we said, each one costs £48,360, which is around £2k more than a regular ID.3 GTX.
