Citroen announces hybrid version of C5 Aircross
The C5’s powertrain options expand to include a full hybrid
Citroen has launched a hybrid version of its C5 Aircross family SUV. The brand has added this to the model's plug-in hybrid, diesel and petrol powertrains already available.
The Hybrid 136 powertrain adds 48V hybrid technology to a Puretech petrol engine. With a 21kW electric motor and six-speed dual-clutch auto ‘box, Citroen claims the electrification of the 134bhp 1.2-litre engine improves fuel economy by as much as 30 per cent in and around town.
The new hybrid powertrain of this ULEZ-qualifying Euro 6 set-up emits 129g of carbon dioxide per kilometre (CO2/km) – almost 12 per cent less CO2 than the diesel version and 15 per cent less than the pure-petrol version.
Getting 169lb ft of torque at 1,750rpm, Citroen has used a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) to give the C5 Aircross more oomph at lower speeds.
Apparently, the price tags for the hybrid and diesel variants aren’t far apart, even though the engine was specially developed for hybridisation. Some 40 per cent of the parts are brand-new and configured so the new hybrid tech doesn't impinge on boot space or cabin room.
A full hybrid offers drivers the benefits of better fuel economy without the hassle of plugging in. This launch also enables the Citroen C5 Aircross hybrid to be listed on company car schemes at a lower salary sacrifice – a move as smooth perhaps as Citroen claims the ride is.
