The Volkswagen ID. Buzz arrives on 9 March!
Long-awaited electric microbus has launch date confirmed by VW CEO
The Volkswagen ID. Buzz concept made its debut at the Detroit motor show way back in 2017, and TG - along with the rest of the world’s media - begged VW to make it. Within a few weeks they caved, and now at long last we have an actual date for the big reveal.
Get 9 March 2022 into your diaries: VW CEO Herbert Diess has tweeted “The legend returns on 03/09/22!” accompanied by a teaser video of the ID. Buzz being digitally sketched. And before you ask, no he doesn’t mean 3 September…
Little is known about the ID. Buzz, although prototype versions have been spotted testing in various places around the world in the last few months. This includes last autumn when Volkswagen used the microbus to trial autonomous driving tech that it hopes to bring to market some time in 2025.
It’ll be built on VAG’s MEB platform, the architecture that underpins the ID.3 hatchback, Skoda Enyaq iV SUV, Cupra Born hot hatch and just about every other VW Group EV planned between now and the end of time.
Those cars take a battery of up to 77kWh, though it’s likely the extended platform under the ID. Buzz will free up space for a few more lithium-ion cells to keep range at a respectable level.
Everything else is pure speculation at this stage, and no doubt we’ll get some answers when the covers come off in the spring. In the meantime, check out what happened when TG took a mock-up ID. Buzz surfing in the south of Spain...
