Mercedes-AMG is preparing an ‘exceptionally extreme’ CLE, and this is it
Hardcore, bewinged Merc coupe will be the second in its ‘Mythos’ series
Mercedes-AMG is currently doing what it does best: filling one of its cars with obscene amounts of horsepower, much wing and preparing it for public consumption.
At least, we think it is. Here are the first official images of a second new model it is building under its ‘Mythos’ series making merry in some Scandinavian snow. What's a 'Mythos', you lament? A very, very expensive and very, very limited edition 'collector's' Benz, the first of which was that rebodied, roofless AMG GT/SL that went by the name of ‘Purespeed’.
This one’s spun off the CLE, but apparently “takes the concept several steps further”, with AMG promising “an even more uncompromising appearance and positioning itself as a genuine statement on the road”. Yeah, a ruddy great big rear wing will do that.
AMG hasn’t yet divulged any powertrain details, only noting that this SuperCLE will be “backed by a correspondingly powerful drivetrain and performance to match”. Currently, the baddest CLE you can buy is the 53. There is no 63 (yet). This being a 'Mythos' car could mean it's even more hardcore than that.
For reference, that Purespeed was powered by the company’s venerable 4.0-litre biturbo V8 churning out 577bhp. TopGear.com is foolishly hoping they’ve got a crate load of old nat-asp 6.2-litre V8s knocking around that need CLE-shaped homes, but then that’s just us.
We’ll find out exactly what’s powering this second ‘Mythos’ Merc, exactly how many will be built, and exactly how much it’ll cost in due course. For reference, AMG built just 250 versions of the Purespeed at a cost of £800k a pop. Maybe not widespread public consumption, then.
