Ford has added a third hybrid model to the Kuga line-up
Self-charging variant offers 48mpg and 600 miles of total range
Another day, another electrified Ford. In the manufacturer’s continuing mission against, er, emissions, it has released a new, self-charging hybrid version of the Kuga SUV, joining the plug-in hybrid and EcoBlue hybrid in the range.
The new model combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and 1.1 kWh battery, with the energy generated when coasting or braking used to enhance performance, improve efficiency, or deliver pure-electric driving.
By automatically switching between power configurations according to driving scenario, fuel efficiency reportedly starts from 48.7mpg and CO2 emissions from 130g/km. Zero to 62mph, meanwhile, takes a fairly respectable 9.1 seconds.
“The ability to travel over 600 miles on a single tank of fuel makes Kuga Hybrid a compelling alternative to diesel powertrains,” says Ford, while the total driving range is more than 30 per cent greater than that of the Kuga plug-in hybrid. Don’t expect to get anywhere near the pure-electric driving range of up to 35 miles of that variant, however.
Thanks to a liquid cooling system the batteries don’t need a cooling fan, which helps to reduce noise levels and the overall size of the battery pack, meaning the model offers up to 1,481 litres of boot space with the rear seats folded flat.
Prices start from £33,600, with the Kuga Hybrid is available in ST Line Edition, ST Line X Edition and Vignale specifications. Interested?
