Volvo has killed off the V90 estate… for good this time

Swede’s final big booted estate rolls off the production line

Published: 10 Oct 2025

Sad times. Volvo’s biggest estate, the V90, has rolled off its Gothenburg production line for the final time. No, seriously this time.

It’s the latest U-turn in a series of U-turns from the Swedish carmaker. Back in 2023 it announced it would kill off all saloons and estates in the UK, amid the unstoppable rise of the SUV. Boo, hiss, etc.

But there was to be a twist in the tale, because just over a year later the Swedish firm backtracked on its decision amid a ‘resurgence’ in demand for estates. Common sense prevails after all!

Sadly, it was to be shortlived – at least for the V90. Just shy of 7,000 V90s and V90 Cross Countrys have been sold year to date globally, making up just over one per cent of the carmaker’s total global sales in 2025.

Indeed, Volvo has sold almost 23,000 XC40s YTD in the UK alone, making up just under half of its total UK sales figure.

A Volvo Cars UK spokesperson told TopGear.com the decision to cull the V90 is “in accordance with Volvo Cars’ global cycle plan”, and not simply a panic move.

The good news is that the smaller V60 estate, available in mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid forms, lives on. For how much longer is anyone’s guess.

This last of the line Volvo V90 will live out the rest of its life at the fancy new World of Volvo museum in Gothenburg. Odds on it being the lowest mileage V90 in existence?
