Goodwood is planning a Sir Stirling Moss Trophy tribute race

Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy to feature stunning classics pedalled by the late motorsport legend

Published: 17 Sep 2020

In honour of the recently departed Sir Stirling Moss, Goodwood Speed Week has announced the Kinrara Trophy race will be permanently renamed The Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy.

The race, which will take place at the ‘Speed Week’ event which replaces this year’s cancelled Festival of Speed and Revival meetings, features great cars that Sir Stirling both competed in and raced against in his heyday. We’re talking Ferrari 250 SWB, Aston Martin DB4 GT and Jaguar E-Type – the quintessential 1960s GT racing cars.

Eligible cars must date from pre-1963, while the race itself last 60 minutes and each car will be shared between two drivers.

Moss’ widow, Lady Susie Moss said: "Stirling and I always received such a warm welcome at Goodwood from the family and the fans. He would have been touched to be remembered with a race in his name. In fact, he'd probably be raring to have a go at it himself."

Too right. Moss famously took victories at Goodwood in the Tourist Trophy race in 1960 and ’61. Of course, the Goodwood Motor Circuit was a bittersweet venue for Sir Stirling, since it was also the location of his career-ending accident on 24th April 1962.

However, Moss made multiple appearances at the track in recent years, driving in demonstration runs and gamely spectating as today’s GT racing aces got to grips with the cars the Brits raced in his youth, over half a century ago.

Festival of Speed founder the Duke of Richmond said: “Stirling Moss was known as ‘Mr Goodwood’. More than anything, though, he was our friend and played a huge part in our history. We miss him terribly and felt there could be no better way of recognising this than by naming a race in his honour.”

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves. Keep an eye out for the race, and the rest of the action from Goodwood Speed Week, on Saturday 17 October.
