You absolutely want this $3 million, ‘fully functional’ replica Batmobile
Includes a 6.2-litre engine and ‘smoke screen delivery system’. Shut up and take our IOU
“The Tumbler? Oh you wouldn’t be interested in that.” Actually Mr Fox, we definitely, definitely would. In black, please.
And almost 20 years after the release of Batman Begins, no longer a pipe dream either. In celebration of the 85th anniversary of possibly the most iconic vehicle in human history, Warner Bros has released this limited-run Batmobile tantalisingly described as ‘fully functional’. Oh boy.
Here’s what you need to know. The Wayne Enterprises Tumbler (but of course) is powered by a 6.2-litre LS3 engine from GM, encountering 525bhp and 486lb ft of torque. The transmission’s from GM too; a four-speed 4L85E with paddle shifters.
It’s also… unlikely to fit into a standard parking space. At 4.65 metres long it’s stouter than a G-Wagen, but it’s also 2.82 metres wide. And it’s not like you’ll be able to blast the width restrictors out of the way, because the gun turrets are imitation only. Careful now.
Weighing in at 2,500kg, the Tumbler is built upon a tubular steel frame akin to those used in the aeronautics industry, with other materials including kevlar, carbon fibre and sheet metal fibreglass.
And it looks sensational right? Not quite the full let’s-apprehend-the-Joker-spec of the Dark Knight, but still close enough to mimic the original that derived its angular design from old cars, boats, and planes.
Included are a set of 15in front tyres and 18.5in rears, four-wheel power disc brakes, a ‘smoke screen delivery system’ (useful for evading the criminals of Gotham) and a ‘jet engine simulation’. No flames though, sadly.
Inside the trim and dash follow the design of the original car, and there’s bespoke seating trim, black Alcantara headlining, 10in digital screens, GPS, air con, one-way mirrored glass (to keep your identity a secret) and… a five-point racing harness. Because you’d definitely take this on a track day.
Only 10 Tumblers will be built, and if the allocation hasn’t already been filled then it surely will be soon. Even if the price is a cool $2,990,000.
