Here's what Frank Stephenson thinks about Gordon Murray's S1 LM

Hot, or not? Frank has his say

Published: 28 Nov 2025

Frank Stephenson is a car designer with more hits than the Beatles, including the Escort RS Cossie, first BMW Mini, Maser MC12, numerous Ferraris and the McLaren P1. These days he runs his own consultancy – Frank Stephenson Design. Here he shares his views on the hypercar from the new Gordon Murray Special Vehicles division, the S1 LM...

Remember the good old days? At first glance, the GMSV S1 LM plays almost like a textbook restomod – but is it just a T.50 cosplaying as an F1 LM?

Whilst the T.50 brought the F1 concept into the modern age, the S1 takes the resemblance and likeness of the F1 far more seriously – in some parts, this is very literal – but that’s sort of the point here. It’s a reimagination of a poster car for the modern age.

The design is beautifully restrained without being dull, it has simplicity in its forms but also a great deal of movement in its surfaces. Mechanical elements themselves become part of the aesthetic – just look at the exhaust system fully exposed in cutouts of the rear deck.

My only critique on first viewing is the size and verticality of the lower intake in front of the rear wheel – in such a dynamic bodyside that straight edge really grabs your attention! And I’m curious to see if anything lies below the ‘eyelid’ headlamp cover.

Inside, the cockpit feels pure and engaging – Murray’s philosophy of lightweight design shines through. Physical controls and exquisitely machined levers ensure that the tactility is retained even when wearing racing gloves – no touchscreen haptic controls here!

Only five will ever exist. Which is perfect. Any more and the world’s supply of gold foil heat shielding might run out...

Where are the real lights hiding? Small naca intakes hide doorhandles, with big intakes below. Blink twice - is that an F1?

Rear bumper cutout gives a lightweight impression and wide stance. Ultra short rear overhang and iconic light graphic. Hollowed out wheels to reduce weight. Character lines recall the F1 in a contemporary fashion. Roof scoop is attached to the engine, not the roof, vibrations galore! Snorkel fades from body colour to red hot! Engine bay is lined with gold.
