Question of the Week: which car would you most like to see make a return?
With the Maserati Quattroporte the latest long-server to bow out, we want to hear your thoughts on which car should make a comeback from the dead
Last week was a sad one because we know the last ever Maserati Quattroporte is going to be rolling out of the factory in the coming months. For over 60 years, the brilliant, suave four-door saloon has been perched close to the top of the segment, acting as the left-field alternative to the likes of the BMW M5.
But it got us thinking… which nameplate would you like to see make a return in the future, and which powertrain would be an ideal fit for it? Given that the Quattroporte also signals the end of Maser’s association with the V8, it makes for a compelling discussion.
Let’s kick off the usual thought-provokers with… the Mazda RX-7. Built over three generations, throughout which it was paired with the iconic burble of a rotary motor, the sleek silhouette and agile dynamics made it a titan of its time. Mazda has teased a potential remake with the Iconic SP, so this one may actually come true, albeit under a different name.
Or how about something a little more flamboyant like, say, the Saleen S7? In many ways it feels like the S7 never really achieved the global status it should’ve - there are still a worrying number of people who don’t even know of its existence. What if it were to make a comeback in an all-guns-blazing attempt to retake the crown from the Hennessey Venom F5 - wouldn’t that be something?
Option number three: the Lotus Elise. This is arguably the one with the highest possibility, given that it’s already been rumoured as part of Lotus’ all-electric lineup of the future. But does it need to be green? What if Hethel was to source Koenigsegg’s TFG three-pot to turn the diminutive, back-to-basics roadster into a go-kart on steroids? The prospect is mouthwatering.
Over to you, dear readers. Let us know in the comments which car you’d most want to see make a return, and what you believe would be the ideal powertrain to give it life. As always, the customary result post will land on Friday. See you there.
