The Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 doesn't get a W16 engine. Boo!
Upgraded track day hero takes inspiration and knowhow from the current Merc F1 car. Sadly doesn't get a Bugatti-rivalling heart
Want to scare everyone off next time you pull up to a track day? You'll be needing this new Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16.
Under the bonnet, the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 has been unshackled and now makes 818bhp – up on the regular racing GT2’s already very healthy 697bhp – and 738lb ft of torque, thanks to new turbochargers and a tweaked ECU.
That maximum output figure is only unlocked when the Push2Pass function is activated, another new addition compared to the, er, regular model, which provides an additional 98bhp and 148lb ft for a limited time.
And all this in a car that weighs just 1,430kg. Sounds like it'll be sprightly.
So there’s extra power. Improved aero too, including active louvres above the front wheels, an enlarged front diffuser, more wind-friendly wing mirrors and a carbon lip spoiler integrated into the boot lid.
The GT2 Edition W16 also features DRS, with the drag reduction system enabling the top speed to increase to ‘over’ 198mph. So 199mph, then?
Anyway. You’ll likely have noticed the new livery and shoes, inspired by Mercedes’ Formula One car. There’s plenty more nods towards F1 when you step inside too, primarily the sill panels, which are signed by Kimi Antonelli. The seat, doors and centre console also feature accents taken from the F1 car’s paint palette.
There’s also a new steering wheel, while a ‘1 of 30’ badge is embedded in the centre console. Because of course this is a limited edition, which explains the – and there’s no easy way of putting this – €679,000 (£589,000 excluding VAT) price tag.
But for that you do get a handover at a European racetrack, including a meet and greet with the drivers and senior members of the Mercedes F1 team, plus race suit, helmet and car cover thrown in free of charge.
Worth it?
