Fisker may be about to enter Extreme E
Henrik Fisker's EV company is in “advanced talks” with the electric off-road racing series
Fisker Inc is in “advanced talks” with Extreme E. The Californian EV company, born from the ashes of Fisker Automotive (anyone remember the Karma?) in 2016, is talking to the all-electric off-road racing series about becoming a partner, and possibly entering a works team in the sport’s inaugural 2021 season.
Extreme E founder and CEO Alejandro Agag said: “Creating the world’s most sustainable racing series is the perfect launch platform for [Fisker’s] new Ocean SUV as well as providing a challenging testing environment for product durability.”
The Ocean is set to go sale in 2022, with up to 300 miles of range, over 300bhp and a vegan-friendly interior. It’s about the same size as a Tesla Model Y, and in the US should cost less than $30,000 (taking Federal Tax Credits into account). The highest-performance version claims 0-62mph in less than three seconds.
Extreme E’s first season is supposed to start with a race in Senegal next January. Races will also be held in Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Greenland and Brazil in “extreme environments… which have already been damaged or affected by climate and environmental issues”.
The aim is to “highlight the impact of climate change and human interference in some of the world’s most remote locations and promotes the adoption of electric vehicles to help preserve the environment and protect the planet”.
Teams will travel across the globe on a specially-adapted cargo ship. Races will not be open to the public, but broadcast live on TV and social media.
We’re very much looking forward to it. What about you?
