The Omoda 4 is a compact SUV inspired by space, science fiction and video games

Chinese carmaker Omoda has revealed the next phase of its world domination plan, which it promises is out of this world. That’s because the '4' has reportedly been inspired by outer space, science fiction and video games. Should've called it the Space Invader.

Omoda is targeting a younger audience with this one. We’re told its “Cyber Mecha” (a Japanese literary genre) design language takes inspiration from the world of space, robotics and science fiction comics. See the angular bodywork, metallic paintjob and lightning bolt-shaped lights front and rear. The lack of sonic thrusters, lightsabers and on-board alien assistant is very disappointing.

Step inside and you’re transported into a whole new world. Oh no wait, you're in a medium-sized family car. But the central display uses a 2.5K Snapdragon processor – “like a gaming screen” – meaning it should be rapid. Like a, erm, spaceship. The Millenium Enterprise, or whatever it's called. 

Separating driver and passenger is a “spaceship-inspired central control centre". Is that central enough for you? It's complete with diamond-shaped physical buttons. The engine start button lies encased beneath a “red, pilot-style cage”, though we suspect Lamborghini’s lawyers will currently be waving their arms around and planning an airstrike with a jet-inspired supercar.

Anyway, the 4 here sits beneath the (surprise) Omoda 5, which sits below the Omoda 7, which – you guessed it – sits below the Omoda 9. Omoda has yet to confirm powertrain specifics, though ICE and electric are expected. No word on a Kessel Run time yet.
