Stellantis first announced its plan to develop four different EV platforms back in 2021, and it has now given us more details on the biggest – and punchiest – of the lot.

Want some figures? The STLA Large platform (Stellantis pronounces that as ‘Stella’ by the way) will house batteries between 85 and 118kWh. With the largest of batteries and a saloon body on top Stellantis reckons cars will manage 500 miles of range, and it also says that a top-spec, all-wheel drive powertrain could sprint from 0-62mph in around two seconds. Good grief. Front and rear-wheel drive layouts will also be possible.

We’re told that cars, crossovers and SUVs can all sit on top of the new platform (which will exist alongside STLA Small, STLA Medium and STLA Frame for pickups and commercial vehicles) and that 270kW rapid charging should be available too.

You’ll be able to have cars with 400- or 800-volt architectures, and although it’s built primarily for BEVs it can also fit hybrid or internal combustion powertrains. Oh, and it’ll be able to accept air suspension and adaptive dampers.

Stellantis says that the platform can manage wheelbases of between 2,870 and 3,075mm and ground clearance of between 140 and 288mm. For reference, a BMW i7 has 136mm of ground clearance, while a Defender 110 gets 291mm. That’s quite the range of cars each brand could use this platform for, then.

Dodge and Jeep will be the first to benefit from the platform in 2024, so we can assume that the recently teased 600bhp Jeep Wagoneer S will be based on this new architecture.

In total there will be eight STLA Large vehicles launched between 2024 and 2026, with Alfa Romeo, Chrysler and Maserati all using it for new models.

The platform’s chief engineer Marc Issner describes the different cars as “top hats”, and hopefully we’ll get some interesting styling to go along with all the tech.
