Question of the Week

Top Gear readers say they most want to see Senna vs Prost as the next big Formula One movie

But while this may have been a whitewash victory from the start, there were more than a few interesting alternatives in the mix

Published: 10 May 2024

This week’s question asked readers which of the many great Formula One rivalries they’d like to see turned into a movie, and the most popular vote was a big-screen adaptation of the fierce battle between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

With 92 Grand Prix wins and seven titles shared between them during an exhilarating period for the sport between 1985 and 1993, it doesn’t come as a surprise that this comes out on top. As Tiago Santos said: “Senna and Prost. There were rivalries after that, but none quite like these two.”

But let’s use this post to shed some light on other requests, beginning with T Bird’s comment: “Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt. It was so unfortunate what happened to Rindt and how his wife hoped he would quit on his own terms.

“It would be dramatic, it would have some seriously cool race cars and it would be interesting if it had some scenes from today of Stewart explaining what happened. I could listen to him talk for hours; he has a way of hypnotising you with his voice.”

Then there was Arun’s vote for another titanic bout: “How about Ferrari vs McLaren as a whole with bits of Schumacher and Hakkinen? I would love a movie that shows how the rocket-powered, Adrian Newey-designed McLaren MP4/13 stopped Schumacher in 1998. Then there was even more of a fight in 2000, but McLaren still had the edge with the MP4/15.”

Arun’s idea gathered a fair amount of support, with one of our favourite comments penned by George: “If I had to choose I would say McLaren and Ferrari in general. I mean, they both do the same stuff: occasionally debut an insane car or just another version of an already existing model, and then we go about our day. In 2014, they both created cars that were specifically meant to compete with one another.”

The final comment we thought worth mentioning was that from Rem, who pitched an answer for two of Lewis Hamilton’s biggest challenges: “Hamilton-Rosberg would be better than people may think. They genuinely were the best of friends before the 2016 title fight, which made them the most bitter of enemies. With the team taking no sides it was truly personal.

Hamilton-Verstappen, on the other hand, was like a war. Whole teams and even nations backed each driver, and the result was one of the most gruelling, political and controversial Formula One seasons ever. The prodigal young gun up against the experienced legend.”

An interesting week of answers, as usual. The next one drops on Monday and may have something to do with electric cars… which won’t be divisive at all.
