The range-topping Volkswagen Golf R Black Edition costs nearly £45k
Though you can get the equally impressive GTI Clubsport for a saving of three(ish) grand
Volkswagen has just revealed the pricing structures for its hottest Golf models beginning with the ‘GTI Clubsport’ (£41,655). A trim level up sits the ‘R’ (£43,320) and ‘R Estate’ (£44,685), while the range tops out with the ‘R Black Edition’ (£44,570).
The 296bhp Clubsport is the zenith of the GTI range, capable of a 0-62mph sprint in just 5.6s courtesy of the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot. Additional fittings include a honeycomb air-intake grille out front, ‘look at me!’ decals along the lower flanks and sharp 18in ‘Richmond’ alloys at each corner. Handsome brute, no?
The R duo then jump the numbers up slightly, using the same seven-speed DSG gearbox - with all-wheel drive and torque vectoring - but with an extra 33bhp and an increased top speed of 167mph. They, too, come with most of the standard interior bits of the Clubsport, including a 12.9in infotainment screen and a swathe of tech and safety systems. Its great-grandfather would be appalled at the heavy adoption of technology.
Last but certainly not least is what’s sure to be the conqueror of most Pizza Hut car parks: the R Black Edition. The output remains the same as the standard R (although an extra 1mph top speed is mentioned, ha). The decorative package also brings 19in ‘Estoril’ wheels and... black paint. Lots of it. Oh, we almost forgot: you get a special drift mode and a G-meter. That’ll make your fellow car park enthusiasts very impressed… for all of 42 seconds.
All four variants can now be ordered, with deliveries likely to commence in the coming months.
