The Omoda 7 will cost from under £30k when it arrives in the New Year

Buyers will get the choice of the pure petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains

Omoda has announced that its mid-size SUV, the 7 – as revealed back in April – will cost from £29,915 when it arrives in the New Year.

Sitting between the compact 5 and the flagship 9 (surprise), it’ll be available with either a 1.6-litre turbo four pot petrol, or Omoda’s Super Hybrid System, which starts from £32k and comprises a 1.5-litre turbo four pot mated to an electric motor and 18.3kWh battery.

The latter gets a combined total output of 201bhp and 269lb ft, for an 8.4secs 0-62mph sprint time and a 112mph vmax. But the more pertinent figure here is the claimed WLTP range of ‘over’ 700 miles, including 56 miles of e-running alone.

The battery can be replenished from 30 to 80 per cent in 20 mins, with support for up to 40kW fast charging. Wait, from 30 per cent? Most rivals measure themselves from 10 per cent. Think a tad longer here. Or, if you’ve any financial sense, stick to home charging…

Two trims will be available to UK buyers, which we’re told have been ‘optimised’ for us, and as with most of the Chinese brands they’re attempting to get bums on seats with generous equipment levels.

The base Knight trim gets 19in alloys, a 10.25in digital display and 15.6in central touchscreen, heated steering wheel, dual zone aircon, six-speaker SONY audio system, wireless smartphone pairing, cooled 50W charging, and a 540-degree camera.

The Noble trim adds 20in alloys, a 1.45m panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated gaming-inspired seats with six-way electric adjustment for both the driver and front passenger, an aircon fragrance system, four-zone voice control, 12-speaker Sony system, and a power tailgate.

All variants will get a seven-year/100,000-mile warranty with the hybrid an added eight-year battery warranty, plus RAC Home Start for the lifetime of the warranty.

It goes up against the likes of the Jaecoo 7, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai and MG HS. Tempted?
